Symphony of Light
Riot Games just made a banger while presenting to us Asian culture.
- A fan’s comment
Southeast Asia has always been treated as a lower priority market in the global gaming community, and gamers in this region often get a much smaller slice of the pie. Therefore when we were tasked to launch League of Legends’ biggest ever in-game event, the Sentinels of Light, we saw an opportunity to put Southeast Asia in the spotlight.
We recreated the global Sentinels of Light theme - a soundtrack familiar with over 150 million League gamers worldwide, using traditional instruments from across Southeast Asia.
This is the Symphony of Light.
Behind the Symphony.
Working closely with Fuse, Metropolitan Festival Orchestra and Cultural Medallion Recipient Eric Watson, we recreated the Sentinels of Light theme with five lead Southeast Asian traditional instruments - the Kompang (Malaysia), Ranat Ek (Thailand), Kulintang (Philippines), Đàn nhị (Vietnam) and Angklung (Indonesia).
These five lead instruments were then backed by a full 20-piece orchestra to create the final track.
Setting the stage.
Taking design cues such as materials, architecture, shape language and colour from cinematic films and the game itself, we turned Zouk Singapore into the interior of the Sentinels HQ - setting the perfect stage for the Symphony of Light.
Lights, camera, action!
We premiered the Symphony with a live performance on Youtube, and thousands of fans from all across Southeast Asia tuned in.
These fans also literally lit up the live chat function by flooding it with ✨✨✨ emojis to fight the black mist in their own way.
